The history behind the name of the hill town of Kasauli is quite interesting . It is said that the hill town got its name in 17 th century when the Rajput families from Rewari left their homeland and took shelter in a village named Kasul.

There is also another story revolving around its name. Some believe that the name Kasauli has been derived from a mountain stream named Kausalya flowing between Kasauli and Jabli. There is another story behind its name. Since the picturesque valley is always filled with the aroma of Kusmawali or Kusmali, which means the flower maiden, the hill town must have got its name from it.

In the 19th century , the colonial masters developed it as a cantonment sanitarium. The notice board of the Military Hospital justifies the claim of history. Even till date, the hill town has retained its status of being a cantonment.

Even today, one get to see the old colonial bungalows and palatial buildings belonging to princely families of Punjab and by generals in the Indian Army during India's struggle of independence.

The air of Kasauli always sings the song of melancholy. When one peeps into the reason of its gloomy mood, one get to know about a tragic story. In the year 1841,Letitia Lawrence, an infant was buried in tranquil place below the hill town. Henry and Honoria Lawrence, the grief-stricken parents of the infant built a cottage in the hill town in memory of their daughter.

It was built in such a location from where they ould get a glimpse of the grave of their daughter. Probably, this is the reason that the moment one steps in, one can actually feel the deep silence even till date.
